Vision and
Strategy
As market leader and a global company, Nokia takes its
responsibilities seriously. Around the world, a wide
range of stakeholders are showing greater interest in
our ethical performance. Sound company ethics makes
business sense by helping to minimize risk, ensuring
legal compliance, enhancing company efficiency and building
reputation amongst stakeholders.
On these pages, you will find information about our
vision and strategy; impact on society and the environment,
what our main responsibilities are and how we are meeting
them.
Impact on society
By conducting business in a responsible way, Nokia
can make a significant contribution to sustainable development,
at the same time building a strong foundation for economic
growth."
Nokia Chairman and CEO, Jorma Ollila
Our impact on society comes with responsibilities that
go beyond providing useful, safe and quality products.
There are questions as to how well mobile communications
will help bridge the digital divide, life-cycle thinking,
how working conditions are protected within our own
company and in our supply chain, and how we can make
mobile communications universal while respecting local
economies and cultures.
Mobile communications can make a significant contribution
to sustainable development through responsibility towards
the ecology, stimulation of economies, building social
networks and making access to information easier.
Responsibility towards nature
Digital communications offers the chance to decrease
use of raw materials and energy. For instance, electronic
transaction and storage reduces the need for travel
and transportation; smaller products mean less raw material
and some new services do away with physical products
altogether, as in the case of the answering machine.
Stimulation of economies
Mobile communications contributes to the efficiency
of companies - logistics, marketing, internal communications.
Furthermore, the mobile phone has proved a valuable
tool for small companies and entrepreneurs. New service
concepts, also in the public sector, have grown up around
mobility, for example, those based on SMS.
Building social networks
Personal communications is perhaps the most obvious
benefit of mobile communications, with the mobile phone
being used to build and maintain relationships in increasingly
diverse ways; between friends or children and parents,
for people in need of help, for communities that have
not had widespread access to telephony. The mobile phone
gives people a voice.
Making access to information easier
No longer just person to person, mobile devices put
people in touch with information, convey news at it
happens, at home and abroad.
Done in the right way, these benefits outweigh potential
negative effects or public concerns, such as the risk
of a growing digital divide, doubt about health issues,
stand-by energy consumption, concerns for waste and
recycling, the potential negative side of globalization
and changing consumer behaviour.
"The main losers in today's very unequal world
are not those that are too exposed to globalization,
but those who have been left out."
Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations
As market leader with global operations, Nokia has
a major impact on society and we take our responsibilities
seriously. With a mobile phone market share approaching
40% and approximately every third phone in use from
Nokia, our products influence the lives of hundreds
of millions of people. Through our whole value chain,
from sourcing and own staff, to customers and business
partners, we affect employment, social well-being and
economic development in both developed and developing
countries. Through our product life cycle we impact
the ecology. Through employee relations and supply chain
management we influence human rights. Our stakeholders
expect that we produce high-quality, safe products while
upholding the law, protecting the environment, and following
ethical best practice.
The more far-reaching benefits of digital communications
naturally take time and demand the efforts of many organizations,
not all in the private sector. For example, before people
in developing countries have easy access to communications
products, telecommunications policies, trade legislation
and infrastructure need to be in place. And although
there is much to be done, progress is being made. For
example, there have been more mobile connections created
in Africa during the last 5 years, than landline connections
during the last century (source: UN).
The significant role telecommunications plays in world
issues and Nokia's market leadership, means the best
contribution Nokia can make to sustainable development
is to carry out its business in a responsible way. This
premise forms the basis for our commitment to creating
ethically sound policies and principles and implementing
corporate responsibility programs.
Stakeholder relations
Understanding what different stakeholders expect from
us as a company, is just as important as understanding
customer needs for our products. Stakeholder engagement
is the chance to listen to and translate expectations
into business value. It is an opportunity to discuss
what responsibility lies with the different members
of society. It is a window into the future and so an
important input into future business success.
By stakeholders, we mean individuals and groups of people
that influence or are influenced by our company. These
include, but are not limited to, consumers and network
operators, business associates and suppliers, employees,
shareholders and investors, academia, the media, non-governmental
organizations (NGOs), consumer associations, governments
and authorities.
Our aim is to make stakeholder dialogue part of everyday
business, in order to have the best exchange of information
and get the right information quickly to the people
who can evaluate it and put it to good use. An example
is our supplier development process, where purchasers
undergo training to discuss ethical issues with suppliers
and where Supplier Days are arranged to involve senior
management.
Employee engagement
Responding to employees' expectations on corporate
values, openness, career development, performance management,
diversity and work-life balance is important for attracting,
retaining and motivating employees. Furthermore, Nokia
can only make a difference in the world through the
actions of individuals, which means the efforts of every
employee are needed. Nokia encourages internal dialogue
on ethical and environmental issues in a number of ways.
The Listening to You employee opinion survey is a questionnaire
made annually since 1994. The questionnaire is followed
up with focus groups and internal communications. General
and issue-specific focus groups and interviews are conducted
not only as a "reality check" to gauge the
current status, but also to identify and respond to
emerging issues. "Ask HR" is an on-line forum
for employees to raise questions or discuss issues related
to their well-being. Questions can be posted anonymously.
Other activities related to feedback on employee relations
include worker councils and staff events, the individual
IIP (Investing In People) performance management and
career development discussions, exit interviews, as
well as many items within induction and training programs.

roadside assistance, navigation and advanced safety
features for automobiles. Nokia also provides integrated
electronics for the powertrain, chassis, sensors and
interior controls.
